At Attention with Chuck Sourbeer: Spring into a Season of Growth

Go to previous page

Spring is coming, and with that, a time of renewal. Having a successful renewal involves two key components–a solid foundation and healthy growth. We are proud to say that by keeping these factors in mind for the past 15 years, IHG® Army Hotels has enjoyed steady success while serving the military community, families, contractors and civilians.

Through the Privatization of Army Lodging (PAL), IHG Army Hotels has enabled our guests to experience the same quality they expect from our hotel brands off base. It’s the kind of hospitality we’re proud to offer and the kind that military guests and their families deserve. By renovating outdated properties and branding them as Holiday Inn Express® hotels, and building new Candlewood Suites®, and Staybridge Suites® hotels, we have been able to provide military lodging that’s more comfortable, secure, and convenient.

Our commitment to better military lodging doesn’t end there. We continue to improve and enhance our guest experience by reinvesting in our hotels. We’re currently on target to reinvest $5.2 billion over the next 50 years; for every $100 spent, $43 gets put back into our hotels. After all, top-notch comfort and security are our goals for every booked stay.

Privatization has also led to a substantial savings to the Army. On average, IHG Army Hotels saves the Army approximately $70 million annually, with a total savings of $4.3 billion expected over the life of the program. This allows for the military to focus on their mission of protecting and defending our country; and leaving the task of providing quality lodging for their service members to us.

We’re also proud of the savings enjoyed by our guests through our IHG® One Rewards program. Guests can earn points at IHG Army Hotels and redeem those points at 6,000+ IHG Hotels & Resorts worldwide. It’s a great way for families to enjoy some much-needed R&R at amazing hotels in popular destinations. So far, our guests have earned more than 7.3 billion points, which is the equivalent to over 292,000 reward nights–a huge benefit for allowing us to enjoy your company during your stay.

Being a part of the military community also means providing opportunities. We employ more than 1,800 colleagues, and many of them are veterans or members of military families. They’re experts on the challenges of military travel because they’ve done it themselves, making them a crucial part of what might be our biggest success: increased guest satisfaction.

Within the last year, we are proud to say that our hotels have earned a high guest satisfaction rate—nearly 70% of our guests gave us a score of 5 out of 5 in our post-stay surveys.

It’s been an honor to provide such well-deserved hospitality to DoD, service members, veterans, and families for the last 15 years. These ratings only inspire us more to continue providing excellent service that doesn’t just meet your needs, it exceeds your expectations.

Speaking of service, I’d like to congratulate two outstanding hotel colleagues. First, our Superstar of the Year Award winner: Henry Smothers, Maintenance Representative at IHG Army Hotels on Fort Cavazos, TX. Having started working at the hotel in 2021, he’s achieved a great number of accolades in quite a short amount of time.

Henry was nominated by his General Manager, based on his significant contributions to the workplace, demonstrating outstanding performance, and displaying an embodiment of IHG’s set of corporate values–known as the Winning Ways. It’s colleagues like Henry that make our hotels such great places to stay.

Secondly, I’d like to applaud Honour Stone, General Manager at IHG Army Hotels on TAMC/Fort Shafter in Hawaii. Honour was invited to be a panelist during our Corporate event for International Women’s Day and spoke candidly about the opportunities and challenges she has experienced along her rise to become a General Manager. She is an example of True Hospitality on and off the job.

It’s been a privilege to provide true hospitality to our military guests and their families these past 15 years, and we’re looking forward to continuing our commitment to excellence for many more years to come.

Our success under PAL is why we fully support the expansion of lodging privatization to other branches of the military.

Thank you for choosing IHG Army Hotels. We look forward to serving you again soon.
