Explore fascinating moments of American history when you stay at Holiday Inn Express Building 12015 on Fort Lee, Virginia. Named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee, this post is near several historical sites that transport you back to the Civil War and even as far back as American colonial life.
Petersburg National Battlefield Park
Visit one of the most important sites of the Civil War. This is where then Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant led the Siege of Petersburg against General Lee in order to cut off supply lines in the Confederate capital of Richmond. Union forces prevailed and caused Lee to abandon both cities prior to his surrender 6 days later in April 1865. The park is free to the public and offers exhibits that include personal artifacts found on the battlefields as well as several natural habitats that were once used for defense.
The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier
The Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier originally began as an effort to preserve the Civil War battlefield but has now evolved into a campus featuring museums, antebellum homes, and educational programs.
The museum includes a memorial honoring soldiers who served in the Civil War; The Field Quarter, highlighting the hardships of slaves; and The Battlefield Center , featuring collections of artifacts from the Breakthrough Battle of April 2, 1865.
Looking for something a bit more active? The Breakthrough Trail takes visitors through Arthur’s Swamp and the path of the Vermont Brigade. With a few different distance options, this walk can be enjoyed by most visitors. Before your visit, be sure to check out the museum’s calendar for any special events.
Richmond
Just 30 minutes away, Richmond has many attractions, making it perfect for a quick day trip. Check out The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and its 50 acres of gardens and visit the Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson and one the oldest statehouses in the United States.
Williamsburg
If you’re travelling with kids, Colonial Williamsburg is a must-see. From haunted ghost tours to demonstrations in Market Square, there’s plenty for your little ones to learn while having fun. Some tours require tickets, but most of the downtown area is open to the public.
