East Coast Discoveries
The rich tapestry of the East Coast draws many summer travelers every year. Steeped in our nation's history, natural beauty, and charming cities, this region of the country is full of hidden gems. Here are just a few of our favorites.
- Fort Belvoir, VA: Located less than 30 minutes away from our Staybridge Suites, Building 1208, is Mason Neck State Park. This park, located on Belmont Bay, is the perfect summer escape from the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C. The park features hiking trails, picnic areas, and canoe and kayak rentals, and is a local favorite for bird watching, particularly for the American bald eagle.
- Fort Drum, NY: Training with the 10th Mountain Division isn't the only thing to do at Fort Drum. Our Candlewood Suites Building 9090 is a short trip to the Tug Hill Vineyard. What better way to relax and enjoy the end of summer than watching the sun set as you drink a chilled glass of your favorite wine? Set just above the Black River Valley, you'll enjoy the close of summer in a picturesque location that looks like something out of a Thomas Kinkade painting.
- Fort Bragg, NC: Founded in 1989, the Cape Fear Botanical Garden covers 80 acres between the Cape Fear River and Cross Creek. Visitors can expect to beat the heat while taking a guided tour, strolling along the river, or signing up for a yoga and wellness class among the plants. The garden is less than 30 minutes from our IHG Army Hotels Moon Hall.
Central United States Magic
The heartland of America offers many wonderful ways to end your summer. From scenic parks to roadside oddities, you won't want to miss these unique and breathtaking attractions.
- Fort Leonard Wood, MO: In years gone by, an entire generation of Americans experienced the magic of traveling along Route 66. While other roads have taken much of the traffic away from the "Mother Road," you can still experience some of the wonder if you're staying at IHG Army Hotels Warrior Lodge. Less than 15 minutes away is the Uranus Fudge Factory & Route 66 Museum. Make sure to arrive with an empty stomach.
- Fort Leavenworth, KS: If you are feeling like Lewis & Clark and would like to explore the region they once traveled through, you won't want to miss Weston Bend State Park. The park is a great place to view the Missouri River, picnic, and see the late-summer foliage begin to glow. You're less than 7 miles away from this peaceful spot when staying at our Holiday Inn Express Hoge Hall
- Fort Campbell, KY: If your summer adventures find you and your family at our Holiday Inn Express Turner Guesthouse on Fort Campbell, you have to check out Dunbar Cave State Park. The cave is made up of limestone caverns adorned with prehistoric Native American markings. Above ground, you can relax near the lake and explore nature trails.
Go West And Ride Off Into The Sunset
It's not too late in the summer to experience a little taste of the Wild West. With IHG Army Hotels across the country, it's easy to tap into the beautiful western wilderness or explore historic mining towns where fortunes were won and lost, simply by booking your stay.
- Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA: The Pacific Northwest is home to some of our country's most stunning landscapes. Rugged coastlines, majestic mountains, and pristine evergreen forests surround the area. While staying at IHG Army Hotels Buildings 600 Series, we recommend checking out the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is home to a diverse array of wildlife. You can take a relaxing stroll along the boardwalk or check out the exhibits in the visitor center to gain an in-depth understanding of the area's biodiversity.
- Fort Carson, CO: Once in the hands of private landowners, Colorado Springs purchased Red Rock Canyon in 2003 and opened it to the public. Just 30 minutes away from our Candlewood Suites Building 7306 property, you can explore lakes, trails, and an old quarry that was once the primary source of the area's building materials before concrete and steel replaced stone. Plan on enjoying miles of hiking trails, and for the truly adventurous, the canyon offers many amazing rock climbing features.
- Fort Huachuca, AZ: The promise of gold lured many travelers west. You can end your summer in true 49'er style by exploring Bisbee, AZ. This quirky town was once a thriving hub for copper, gold, and silver mining. While the mother load may have been extracted from the area long ago, visitors can enjoy the history of the area through tours of the Copper Queen Mine and take in the many attractions that let you feel like you have stepped back in time. Stay at our IHG Army Hotels Main Complex Buildings, and you are less than an hour from Bisbee.
While summer may be coming to a close, there is still plenty of time to make the most of it. With our convenient locations, there are countless opportunities for you and your family to explore, relax, and enjoy the last days of the season. With our on-post amenities, military-friendly rates, and passion for serving you, we hope you make IHG Army Hotels part of your travel plans.
