IHG® Army Hotels Historia Collection™: Carlisle Barracks.
Originally established as a British fort in 1757 with the French and Indian War, Carlisle Barracks became an ordinance center for the Continental Army in 1776 and served as the location where George Washington addressed troops for the Whiskey Rebellion. Since 1951, it has been the home of the Army War College. Most recently, three historic buildings on campus have been renovated for military guests.
The oldest of the three buildings, Pratt Hall, was erected in 1879 after Superintendent B.G.R.H. Pratt successfully lobbied the Department of the Interior and the War Department for an Indian industrial school. By February 1880, the school had 147 students, recruited from the Sioux, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, and Arapaho reservations in the West.
Five years later, the building first designated as the Indian School Hospital, and later named Washington Hall, was erected at the barracks. This building also functioned as a dormitory.
In 1920, Ashburn Hall became home to the Medical Field Service School established under the command of Col. Percy M. Ashburn. Its mission was to develop medical equipment and doctrine suitable for the battlefield, including training in disease prevention and the art of caring for the wounded in the field.
The three buildings at Carlisle Barracks have been preserved and carefully renovated to offer military guests an elevated hotel experience that still maintains the historical character of the original buildings. The buildings offer just 45 guest rooms, all richly appointed with fixtures and furnishings that complement the original designs, and with amenities that include upgraded bed linens and towels, free internet access, free on-post shuttle service, weekly socials, and free breakfast seven days a week.
Created in 2013 to preserve and celebrate the heritage of some of the historic on-post buildings that now house guests of IHG® Army Hotels, the Historia Collection offers guests an unforgettable stay.
