April 5th is Gold Star Spouses Day - an annual day of remembrance and recognition meant to honor the surviving loved ones of military service members who were killed in the line of duty. This year, in recognition of their sacrifices, we’re pleased to provide some information about Gold Star Spouses and families and how you can observe this very special day.
In 1947, the Gold Star lapel pin was designed for family members of those who died in combat. During the funeral service of the fallen military member, senior officers present the lapel pin in addition to the national colors, to a service member’s spouse or next of kin as a sign of respect for their sacrifice.
In 2010, the first Gold Star Wives Day was observed. In 2012, the Senate passed a resolution that codified Gold Star Wives Day, setting it to be observed annually, every April 5th. Later, the name was revised to Gold Star Spouses Day, making the observance more inclusive.
Gold Star Spouses Day is not a national holiday, but many military installations do something special to observe the day. In the past, some military posts have held 5K races or other events honoring those affected. This year, if you’d like to raise awareness for, or simply honor Gold Star spouses and families, check with your nearby military post to see what they may be doing, or learn more at your local Survivor Outreach Services. Additionally, you can join the national social media campaign set to raise awareness of Gold Star Spouses Day by tagging #GoldStarSpousesDay on your April 5th post.
We at IHG® Army Hotels have the utmost appreciation for these military families and their strength. So, we invite you on this Gold Star Spouses Day, and every day, to keep their sacrifices in mind and find ways to extend your gratitude to the men and women who paid the ultimate price for our country and the families they’ve left behind.
