IHG® Army Hotels on Hunter Army Airfield just got a little greener and a little sweeter!
We are excited to share that the newly formed IHG Army Hotels Garden Club has just created its first garden! Located on a plot of land next to IHG Army Hotels’ parking lot, the garden is providing homegrown produce, including tomatoes, peppers, carrots, greens, watermelons, peaches, and oranges.
General Manger and project leader, Barbara Dornbusch, initially created the idea for a garden as a delicious initiative to make the hotel eco-friendlier. Shortly after, Dornbusch’s idea grew into a major project for the hotel.
Aside from providing the hotel with fresh food, The Garden Club also plans to donate some of the produce to the local food bank, America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, located in Savannah, Georgia.
All of the hotel’s staff is excited and involved in the new garden, with one staff member in charge of maintaining the garden and its produce on a weekly rotation. But the hotel staff members aren’t the only ones eager to take bite of this new opportunity. Guests, locals, and even Deputy Garrison Commander have expressed interest in the project’s tasty treats.
According to Dornbusch, “… once we have established the garden and some good stories of what we did with the produce, more hotels may want to join The Garden Club.” And she was right! As the garden project takes off, other posts are beginning to recognize the tremendous benefits of a project like this one. We expect to see more green gardens like the one located at Hunter Army Airfield sprout up, so keep your eyes and mouths open for these delicious, new initiatives around IHG Army Hotels locations!
