Recognizing National Hire a Veteran Day

THE HISTORY BEHIND NATIONAL HIRE A VETERAN DAY.

In 2017, the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act (HIRE Vets Act) was passed, which marks today – June 25th - as National Hire a Veteran Day. Partially founded by Marine Corps Veteran Dan Caporale, National Hire a Veteran Day is a call to action and reminder to all to hire more Veterans, members of military families, and military spouses.Transitioning to civilian employment has always been one of the biggest challenges for Veterans - and over the past year and a half, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, “unemployment rates for both male and female Veterans increased in 2020, reflecting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

One of the major factors to unemployment in the Veteran community is the time required to be searching for a job, especially during slow economic times. This is why actively bringing recognition to hiring Veterans is so important, either on recognized days like today or throughout the year with Veteran hiring initiatives.

RESOURCES FOR FINDING EMPLOYMENT

There are several resources for Veterans to find jobs and for employers to post listings. Hire Our Heroes, also founded by Dan Caporale, has listings of jobs by category, city, and state. Job seekers and employers can create profiles, job postings, job searches, and resumes all within the Hire Our Heroes portal.

The Veteran Affairs job site also shows listings for the VBA and VA facilities. Per their website, many positions do not require you to be a doctor or nurse to qualify for these jobs, and openings include leadership roles, technology management, accounting, and much more.

Finally, USA Jobs connects Veterans, military spouses, and more to federal employment opportunities across the United States and around the world. In the job announcement section, pay attention to the filters where you can find jobs open specifically to Veterans and military spouses. The site will also inform you of any necessary documents needed to apply for these positions.
